The American Red Cross hopes an upcoming blood drive will address a chronic shortage they’ve experienced since the pandemic began.

They will be holding a blood drive at the Show-Me Center on July 8 and 9 from noon to 6 p.m, marking their first blood drive at Southeast since the pandemic began.

“COVID has been a real issue for us,” Red Cross Account Manager Michelle Johnson said. “We collect 20 percent of our blood from high schools and colleges, so when they’re out, we’re missing that base. It’s been all spring that we’ve been short, but it’s just getting a little bit worse now.”

Donors should schedule appointments online and complete a health history form online before arriving, Johnson said this is to allow for proper social distancing. Donors and volunteers are required to wear masks and extra masks will be available at the door.

Johnson said volunteers and donors will have their temperatures taken at the door of the SMC. Frequent glove changes and station cleanings are also planned.

Donors who are feeling sick are asked to stay home, so as not to risk the health of others. Other information about donor restrictions can be found on the American Red Cross website.

“We all know people who have needed or will need blood,” Johnson said. “People’s surgeries, women giving birth, accidents. One accident victim can take up to 100 units of blood, if it’s really severe.”

Johnson said 69 donors have signed up so far, and they have a two-day goal of 100 donors.

Donors will receive a reversible Redhawks/Blues scarf for participating, while supplies last.
