The Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be displayed in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at the River Campus on beginning on Friday, April 4.

This year's juror, artist Kyle Triplett, said the show will feature 70 pieces of work by students of the Department of Art at Southeast. Work will be displayed across several categories including 2D Color/Design Foundations, 3D Foundations, Graphic Design/Illustration, Digital Arts, Ceramics, Fibers, Printmaking, Painting, Drawing and New Genre.

Awards will be given for the best piece in each category as well as Best in Show and Distinguished Merit Award. Several of the works on display will be available for purchase.

Triplett said events like these are important for students for their current and future professional careers.

"Exhibiting is the biggest part of art making, any opportunity you have as a student to exhibit your work is a huge learning experience," Triplett said.

Among the students chosen to be part of the exhibition are seniors Bryan Pruett, Ashley Sexton and Colton Carter.

Carter's metal sculpture, "Meta," a welding piece, is being judged in the 3D Foundations category. Carter said his approach to his art starts with form.

"I usually start off with a basic idea of a form and then analyze it, come up with a concept, and then change it to meet the concept I am trying to achieve," Carter said.

Pruett also has a welded metal sculpture in the same category titled "Bale." He said the event gives him motivation in making his art.

"Exhibitions make you more confident in showing your work, things like this keep you going on, making more art," Pruett said.

Sexton's piece is titled "These Things" and is a performance piece in the New Genre category. Performance art is defined as "an artform that combines visual art with dramatic performance."

Sexton said she is excited to see more diversity in the exhibition with the inclusion of performance art.

"I come from a performance background, where the art is the process. I come up with an idea and an experience I want the viewer to have, and I do my best to use action and process to get that across," Sexton said.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Crisp Museum. The event is open to the public.
