The Trump Administration launches nationwide deportation efforts
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a widespread campaign to arrest and capture immigrants who are in the United States illegally.
CNN reports that according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, over 1,000 people have been arrested since the raids began on Sunday, Jan. 26.
These “enhanced targeted operations”, according to Forbes, took place in major cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles and Austin, TX.
During Trump’s first week in office, Axios reported that ICE made over 3,500 arrests.
These arrests not only happen in the homes of illegal immigrants, but The Hill reports that they can now take place in churches, schools and hospitals because of an executive order signed by Trump.
Tom Homan, Trump’s newly appointed Border Czar, defended the steps taken by the commander in chief to ABC News.
“Name another agency, another law enforcement agency that has those types of requirements, that they can’t walk into a school or a doctor’s office or a medical campus,” Homan said. “No other agency is held to those standards.”
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupts for the seventh time since December
Kilauea volcano, located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has erupted for the seventh time since Dec. 23, 2024.
The New York Post reports that one of the world’s most active volcanoes has had lava fountains shoot more than 100 feet into the air. This is the seventh eruptive episode in less than a month, with each episode lasting 13 hours to eight days.
While the lava can certainly damage the ecosystem, there are other harmful aftereffects to these eruptions.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) released an update through their Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, warning about dangerous volcanic gas containing carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide.
Another hazard that was mentioned was a phenomenon known as Pele’s hair, which is strands of volcanic glass. These strands can cluster into the appearance of a tumbleweed that a strong wind can easily carry. Exposure to Pele’s hair can cause skin and eye irritation.
The USGS reports that the seventh eruption ended after 16 hours, leaving Kilauea inactive for the time being.
