Southeast Missouri State University students rapidly ate spicy hot wings while spectators cheered. The hot wing eating competition was one event that took place at Field Day on Monday night at the Student Recreation Center-North. Participants had to eat 10 Buffalo Wild Wings hot wings the fastest to earn points.
The Homecoming Planning Committee hosted Field Day. Members from student organizations around campus participated in the event, which consisted of a free-throw contest, eating competitions, a relay race and tug-of-war.
"Field day brings out spirit and healthy competition between Greeks," sophomore Stephanie Kolish, a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, said.
Field Day is one of the competitions that takes place during homecoming week. Anyone can compete and are awarded points during the events. Participants and student organizations win trophies for each individual event and also for overall homecoming week events. The winners are announced at halftime of the homecoming football game after Man and Woman of the Year are announced.
"Field day means a gathering a student organizations, normally Greeks against Greeks. Now other organizations are involved," junior Kelly Farrell, a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, said.
The event kicked off with a free-throw contest. The participants had to shoot and make as many baskets as they could in 45 seconds.
Next, there was an orange-eating contest. One participant from each team had to peel and eat three oranges in the shortest amount of time.
There was also a Tacky Tourist Relay Race. Participants wore tourist attire, threw toilet paper in boxes, rode around on scooters and packed clothes into suitcases.
The next homecoming event is the talent show, which will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Show Me Center.
