On Thursday, Oct. 27, the Southeast Missouri State University Homecoming Planning Committee hosted a trivia night in preparation for homecoming on Nov. 5. This year’s theme is heroes vs. villians.
Homecoming is a big week for many students who are involved, and trivia night usually draws a crowd anywhere from 100 to 130 students at Southeast.
This year’s questions were handpicked by Destiny Borage, a sophomore majoring in political science and director of trivia night.
Borage is part of the Homecoming Planning Committee. Any student at Southeast can apply each year because the committee changes annually. Borage strategically picked each question this year on many different topics.
Borage said homecoming is not just for Greek Life, getting the entire university involved is a high priority.
A table of students eagerly waiting to begin the event consisted of Tyler Zellerman, junior in biomedical science major in Theta Xi; Clayton Hubert, a freshman in social studies education major in Theta Xi; Kelly Genesio, sophomore in marketing management major in Delta Delta Delta, and Alex Bargen, sophomore, marketing management major in Sigma Nu. Each student had a different role and purpose for attending the trivia night.
Each person is part of a sorority or fraternity at Southeast and some were elected, and others were selected to participate in the event. Zellerman was selected because he has the highest GPA in his fraternity, while Hubert was selected because his group needed another representative and he was decent at trivia, he said. Genesio was selected because she “knows about superheroes” she said.
Bargen is the Homecoming Chair for Sigma Nu, he explained how each chapter gets points for their involvement in student life, “You get points for every little thing” he said, which depends on how many students are involved in each event and this year some homecoming events are “doubling as philanthropy,” so the community is being involved also. As homecoming chair, Bargen is in charge of all homecoming week activities for Sigma Nu.
