A SEMO employee was arrested for allegedly possessing a loaded gun into the home football game at Houck Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 30.
KFVS 12 spoke to Dr. Richard Flotron, the director of the Department of Public Safety (DPS), who said an employee found an unattended black bag in the storeroom of Houck Stadium. She found the bag suspicious, and when she searched it, she found a loaded handgun inside.
After discovering the weapon, she contacted DPS to secure the bag.
After investigation, DPS identified the bag's owner as 35-year-old William Wells of Cape Girardeau.
Flotron said Wells is a contracted employee of the university.
KFVS 12 reported that Wells told the police that the bag and the handgun were his property, and he entered the stadium prior to opening and weapon detection systems being in place.
Flotron said Wells didn’t threaten the police or the public and was taken into custody without incident.
The Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney's office issued a $20,000 surety bond, and Wells is currently being held in Cape County Jail while awaiting these charges.
