On Feb. 26, the Student Government Association (SGA) Vice President Kayla McCain, elected in April 2023, was officially impeached.

President Harrison Meyer confirmed the impeachment on March. 4, but said he can not disclose the reason for the impeachment.

“The discussion of the impeachment was a closed session, so we cannot share that openly. Following the impeachment, the Vice President resigned,” Meyer said.

According to the minutes of the Feb. 26 meeting, 20 members of the SGA voted to impeach McCain, eight members voted against her impeachment and one member abstained from voting.

Following SGA’s vote to impeach her, McCain resigned from her role as Vice President.

According to the student government bylaws, section 306 No. 1, the decision for the impeachment could be for a number of reasons.

“Malfeasance of office, violation of duly enacted regulations, gross violation of the Student in Good Standing status as defined in By-Law 405.01, or violation of other legislation of Student Government,” Student Government Bylaws stated.

Student body Secretary and senior corporate communication major Nolan Briegel said it was important to note that after the vote, McCain resigned from her position.

“Kayla McCain was impeached. However, that does not mean she was removed by the Student Senate from her role as Vice President,” Briegal said. “But Kayla, yes, also unfortunately did resign.”

McCain said the primary reason behind her resignation was to avoid making SGA go through an investigation process.

“I didn’t want to make anybody go through that entire investigation process. I didn’t feel it was necessary,” McCain said.

McCain said she did not feel comfortable revealing why she believes she was impeached, as SGA made the decision in a closed session.

McCain also notes that there is no bad blood between her and the SGA following her impeachment and resignation.

“I’m not mad at anybody, and I don’t feel like anybody’s mad at me,” McCain said.

Following McCain’s resignation, according to the bylaws, the Parliamentarian becomes the Senate Pro Temp, in place of the vice president, who leads the senate of SGA.

“Currently, Lydia Pobst, our Parliamentarian, is filling the void as the acting president of the senate until a new vice president is nominated by Student Body President Harry Meyer. Harry has not nominated somebody yet, and I look forward to seeing his nominee for vice president,” Briegal said.
