Is there anything more “American fashion” than Shrek references?
Sigh. Here we go.
I’m not even gonna lie to you — I let out an audible, “Huh?” when the theme of this year’s Met Gala was announced. The Met Gala fundraiser is my *fave* fashion event of the entire year, and I have, um, Big Feelings about the 2021 event.
The positives? Every attendee went in their own direction on the theme, whether their ensemble referenced an American icon like Taylor Swift or cultural mainstays like Ciara’s football jersey dress. It was cool to see the true mix-and-match of American culture.
The negative is a biggie. I’m soooo sorry to disappoint, but I really didn’t vibe with the theme. “In America: a Lexicon of Fashion”? What the heck does that even mean?
I am *totally* convinced nothing can top 2018’s Heavenly Bodies or 2019’s Camp themes, for the record. You’re looking at the girl who’s so obsessed with the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” looks that she ordered an (overpriced!) poster for her dorm room.
Other students might have band or movie posters on their walls, but I am simply ~nOt liKe oTheR giRLs~.
Hehe JK. Anyway, let’s dissect some of the looks from this year’s event.
The 2021 gala’s MVPs are the celebs who truly embraced the theme. Frank Ocean, I’m looking at u + ur Shrek baby. Who, apparently, is named Cody and wears more designer threads than I could dream up.
The more ya know.
But no, really, he seriously rocks the lime green hair (Frank, not the green robot child). Kid Cudi took a similar approach with the neon green look and even added some heavy eye makeup.
I’m not sure I totally understand Anja Rubik’s look, but I’m living for the blue trim on her sheer dress! Kendall Jenner and Emily Blunt also totally rocked sheer dresses, both with super flowy jewel patterns.
Icon Olivia Rodrigo’s jumpsuit with the fur trim was also *chef’s kiss*. BRB, I’m on my way to totally steal the look — Bling Ring style. Joking, of course.
Now, for the uh, not-so-cute looks.
I’m paraphrasing what several people posted on Insta, but Kim K is totally changing career paths to be a dementor, a lá “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” And, A$AP Rocky, Twitter is begging you to plz leave the Berry Cap’n Crunch in the supermarket cereal aisle.
RiRi, you knew about this and didn’t stop him? *gasp*
There’s way way way too many looks to discuss them all. Check out this gallery, then Tweet me your thoughts at @nbakerARROW!
