Sticking with the Integrity Week theme, Career Services shared strategies to stay ethical in the job search process at a Sept. 10 event in the University Center.

Students at the event learned how to apply for a job, fill out a resume, interview for a position and network with other professionals.

“Our focus area is to help you learn development and strategies,” said Jennifer Woolf, Coordinator for Career Counseling at Southeast.

Woolf described the “do’s and don’ts” of the job application process throughout her presentation.

Among the list of things Woolf said job seekers should avoid were embellishing skills or credentials, including inconsistent information on a resume and applying for positions without adequate qualifications or real interest in the opportunity.

She recommended applicants follow up on interviews to thank potential employers and speak in positive terms about previous employers to show new employers a positive attitude.

When providing information to employers about themselves, Woolf said applicants should make sure they can prove their achievements.

Freshman Christiane Santisteban was among some 25 students in attendance and said she learned a lot.

One of the most important lessons she learned was “how to act and respond in an interview,” as well as “the proper way to do things,” Santisteban said.

Another student who attended the presentation, Tanatswa Musunda, said her biggest takeaway from the presentation was to “be courteous, whether it be in your emails or in person.”
