Donald Trump has gained 277 electoral votes, placing him above the 270 benchmark and making him the 47th of the United States.
According to AP News, Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamila Harris, only won 224 electoral votes.
Trump also won the popular vote, gaining 70 million votes, compared to Harris, who gained over 66 million votes.
The swing states that were crucial to Trump’s victory were Georgia, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
The BBC reported that once Trump takes office, he promised he would hold mass deportations of illegal immigrants, end inflation, pardon some people who participated in the Jan. 6 storming of the capital, fire special counsel Jack Smith, who has indicted Trump for his alleged mishandling of classified documents and end the war in Ukraine.
USA Today reported that in his speech after the election, Trump empathized with bringing the country together to focus on the future.
“It's time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us,” Trump said. “It's time to unite.”
Trump will be sworn into office at the inauguration ceremony in the capital building on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
