President Donald Trump was inaugurated for the second time on Monday, Jan. 20, sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts. For the first time since Grover Cleveland, a President has been inaugurated for two nonconsecutive terms in office, according to NBC New York.
Vice President J.D. Vance was also sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, with his Second Lady Usha Vance and his young kids at his side, according to USA Today.
Carrie Underwood performed “America the Beautiful” at the swearing-in ceremony, delivering the song a cappella after technical difficulties, according to ABC News. Along with Underwood, The Village People, Jason Aldean and Rascal Flatts will perform at other inaugural events.
In attendance were world leaders, former presidents, and the three richest people in the world, according to Time, all clamoring to hear the new President speak.
During Trump’s inaugural speech, he talked about moving forward as a nation.
“The Golden Age of America begins right now,” Trump said. “From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world.”
Trump also reflected on the assassination attempt that nearly took his life, using it as a mandate for his new administration.
“Those who wish to stop our cause have tried to take my freedom, and indeed to take my life,” Trump said. “Just a few months ago, in a beautiful Pennsylvania field, an assassin’s bullet ripped through my ear. But I felt then and believe even more so now, that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again.”
In past Inaugurations, millions of people would pour into the national mall to listen to the President take the oath of office. However, due to the frigid temperatures, the ceremony was held indoors to a crowd of only several hundred people, according to Time.
On his first day of office, Newsweek reports that Trump has hinted that he could sign up to 100 executive orders, a number never seen before.
While Jan. 20th or “Liberation Day,” according to the new President, marked the beginning of a new era for Trump, it also ended the 50-year political career of the now Former President Joe Biden.
Before leaving office, Biden signed multiple pardons for members of his family, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and members of the Jan. 6 Committee, according to The Associated Press.
Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Biden and his wife, Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, boarded a plane headed for Joint Base Andrews for a speech, and then they will head to California for vacation, according to USA Today.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff are also headed to California after the inauguration, according to CBS News. They also have plans to get an apartment in Manhattan while Emhoff returns to his law practice.
After the noon swearing-in ceremony, the newly elected President and Vice President attended a congressional luncheon, and then Trump reviewed the military troops, according to USA Today. The Presidential Parade was held at 2:00 pm CT, starting on Pennsylvania Avenue and taking the processional to the White House.
The historic day concluded with three inaugural balls, where Trump attended and delivered remarks, according to USA Today.
As the day concludes and a new administration comes into office, unity and excitement can be felt throughout the country. Trump remarked on this during his inaugural speech.
“National unity is now returning to America and confidence and pride is soaring like never before,” Trump said. “In everything we do. My administration will be inspired by a strong pursuit of excellence and unrelenting success. We will not forget our country. We will not forget our Constitution and we will not forget our God.”
