The Environmental Science Association (ESA) kicked off Earth Week celebrations ahead of Earth Day on April 22, with the Ecopalooza event Tuesday afternoon.
ESA offered a station allowing students to plant seeds in a small pot, along with blue and green paint to take a pledge to reducing plastic waste as part of the Earth Week celebration.
President of ESA, Anahi Gamboa said the club wanted to start the celebration off early.
“On Monday, we had a climate change speaker, Natalie Lucas, and that just started off our Earth Week for us,” she said. “Now we are just setting it off with a big bang.”
With Ecopalooza, Gamboa hopes students gained a lot more knowledge about ESA.
“I just hope they realize that there is an organization on campus that is promoting environmental awareness and sustainability and just giving them resources that they never thought were possible,” Gamboa said.
Environmental Science major and previous member of ESA, Christie Leslie said she had no reason not to join in on the activities.
“I was really excited about the event and it’s a beautiful day so I came out,” she said.
Student Prabesh Amatya also joined in on the event due to his interest in preserving the earth.
“This is important,” Amatya said. “If we do not have earth then what do we have?”
ESA will continue their Earth Week celebration with a group service event on April 22, as well as volunteering at the nature center.
“We’re going to do Clean Up Cape with friends so we’ll just be around the city cleaning up and planting things,” Gamboa said.
