SEMO has found a solution this semester for students looking for weekly campus events with a new website called Engage SEMO.
Engage SEMO is where organizations from all over campus add their upcoming events to one page. SEMO students log on, find their interests and all the information is right before their eyes.
Junior theater/writing major Teddy Martin uses social media and spends a lot of time combing through pages of organizations looking for interesting things to do during the week and on weekends.
“Right now, I go on Facebook to find what is going on around campus, but I have to scroll through so much other stuff just to find what I am looking for,” Martin said. “This website is so helpful because a lot of people who aren’t directly part of these organizations might feel like outsiders.”
Martin said the website would be a useful tool to allow more people to feel included and it saves time from going through pages trying to find what is currently happening on SEMO’s campus.
Senior administrative assistant for Campus Life Andrea Buerck said Engage SEMO was created in the spring semester.
“Prior to this year, we had a student platform called SE Link where all student events were listed but no one was super engaged with it,” Buerck said. “Our contract was up so we decided to try this new platform where every upcoming event is just a click away.”
Buerck said over 180 organizations have utilized the website so far but it is still a work in progress.
“We need organizations to reach out and register with campus services and the student government association,” Buerck said. “After registering, organizations need to keep updating their events.”
One organization taking advantage of the website is Holland College of Arts and Media. Both River campus and the Crisp Museum post on Engage SEMO to keep students updated with events.
Business and Box Office manager Ellen Wood utilizes the Engage SEMO website for the Holland College of Arts and Media.
“We want students to be aware of what we offer here at River campus,” Wood said. “With all the activities that SEMO has, it is easy to overlook things.”
Wood encourages other organizations to register with the website to make it easier to get their information out to students.
“It would be so beneficial for groups and departments to get onboard,” Wood said. “All our information would be in a one stop website and that is so helpful.”
