The Student Activities Council (SAC) hosted a game of capture the flag with a twist on Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the University Center.

Separated into two teams of five, students were armed with Nerf guns for a game of capture the flag in the Center for Student Involvement.

Senior communication disorders major Makenna Woods, the indoor on-campus committee team lead for the SAC, said the games were inspired by childhood memories.

“When I was a kid, my brother loved Nerf guns, and I remember having so much fun playing and building forts with my family, and I kind of wanted to recapture that with this, and build connections with people,” Woods said.

As students arrived and signed in, they were split into teams of five. Each team was given five minutes to build their forts, and then the game began. The teams were given three minutes to try to capture the flag from the other team.

The games were hosted by the Student Activities Council. SAC is a student programming organization on SEMO’s campus, which hosts events for the student body. More information about SAC can be found on the SEMO website.

Senior social work major Ashlyn Cunningham, the outdoor on-campus committee team lead, said that the motivation behind Nerf night was to give students an opportunity to decompress as we get further into the semester.

“We’re really hoping that students will be able to relax and take their time to really build connections with other people, and get themselves out there,” Cunningham said.

Senior psychology major, and SAC’s special projects team lead Sophie Martin said that she hopes students will be able to channel nostalgia for the games, and take a minute to relax.

“It’s a way to relax, and kind of bring back childhood, because it’s the first semester, and people miss being home, so this is just a fun way to destress, since we all know, it’s week five and it’s already stressful,” Martin said.

As the semester continues, SAC will be hosting events across campus. Martin said that they will be hosting events like a Cardinals game, homecoming and more. To find more information on upcoming events, check out their social media.
