On February 21st, the Academic Support Centers held a seminar to discuss Scholarships and Financial aid so students can create stepping stones instead of obstacles.
It was designed to help students better understand the different types of scholarships and how to apply for them.
Cheryl Cooper, program specialist for scholarships hosted the presentation. She presented a jeopardy game powerpoint to get students involved while learning about different kinds of scholarships, financial aid, billing and student academic progress requirements.
Student Mariah Lafore, who attended the seminar said.
“Being a freshman I definitely found this seminar to be very beneficial to me. I learned about the Merit and Endowed Scholarships which I knew absolutely nothing about before. I think that these kind of seminars should be mandatory for freshman to go to since we’re all new to college and most of us know nothing about how scholarships or financial aid work.”
Cheryl Cooper’s presentation showed students how easy it is here at Southeast to apply for scholarships. Although it may seem confusing, there are key steps which can be taken to eliminate the confusion and make the process much easier.
According to Southeast’s website, students can find applications for scholarships through the Southeast portal or in Academic Hall on campus. There are a variety of scholarships available to all students. Scholarships can be used to cover tuition and books, as well as things like housing and dining. It’s important for students especially freshman to understand how scholarships work considering it could save them a ton of money.
Southeast students receive more than $17 million annually in the form of Academic, Endowed and Participation scholarships. Any applicable student can apply for these, which makes attending Southeast more affordable than other universities.
The Academic Supports Center really wants students to be aware of this information and that is why they hold two informational seminars every semester regarding scholarships and financial aid. They want the scholarship and financial aid process to be more of a comfort than a burden.
