A quick trip down the aisles of any major shopping establishment will show one thing: Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I love the Christmas season. I've never been called a scrooge. What bothers me about the numerous aisles of Christmas decorations is the timing.
I honestly have no desire to see Christmas décor before Black Friday. I am a scheduled person. I like order. Having Christmas decorations out before finishing Thanksgiving, and this year even Halloween, goes against my typical schedule.
I am a firm believer in finishing one task before moving on to the next. So, by my schedule, Christmas decorations need not be seen before Thanksgiving is over. Thanksgiving is the last holiday on my list before the Christmas season begins.
Not only are decorations filling the aisles of shopping centers, ads for Christmas events have also taken over the airwaves. As I sit on my couch writing this, a Wal-Mart Christmas commercial is playing on the show I recorded on Sunday, Nov. 13. Really? That's more than a month away from Christmas. The house across the street was decorated early with a flowing red bow on the front door and a fully lit Christmas tree in the bay window. This amount of decoration being up so early is just crazy to me.
I will not be pulling anything Christmas related out of storage until at least Nov. 25. Others can choose to decorate well before I deem it socially acceptable, but I will not be caught with so much as a piece of garland in hand until after Thanksgiving.
My friend Truan attempted to decorate the house for the Christmas holiday early. My response: "Do it and watch them be ripped down. I will do it."
With the holidays swiftly approaching, my threats about ripping down decorations will get fewer and fewer. I will embrace the Christmas spirit, just not before the end of November. For those who get filled with Christmas spirit early -- have fun. I'll join you soon!
