The International Student Association (ISA) will host their end of the year picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. on May 12 in Capaha Park shelter three.
Both international and domestic students are welcome to attend. Burgers and hot dogs will be
provided, and students can bring their own food if they choose.
Games like corn hole and ladder toss, a lawn game played by throwing bolas onto a ladder, will be available for students to play. Staff members will bring their guitars for anyone who wants to sing or play.
Executive director of International Education Services Kevin Timlin said it is the first end of the year picnic they are hosting. He said they typically host a summer international student picnic instead.
“For all the students in town or who couldn’t go home, we wanted to have an informal gathering for people,” Timlin said.
International student counselor Hannah Weathers has organized and helped plan the past summer International Picnics as well as the events from her time as assistant director of Southeast's Student Recreation Center.
Since the event is during finals week, Weathers said she expects fewer attendees. However, she is still optimistic about the turnout of the event.
“The idea is to get together at the end of the year [to say] ‘We made it, let’s eat, collaborate with peers, be outside and have a good time,” Weathers said. “I hope to attend to see the similar energy from past student events [I have helped plan],”.
ISA President Tafadzwa Mlambo is excited to be a part of the international picnic for the first time.
“Being able to share the international experience and reconnect with people who share the culture shock is wonderful. It is also an opportunity for us to mingle with the domestic students and share our culture with them as well,” Mlambo said.
