Students Activities Council will host its first comedian of the semester, Daphnique Springs, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 in the UC Program Lounge at Southeast Missouri State University.
The event will be free for students with a Southeast ID.
Springs is an actress, comedian and writer from Florida. She was featured in multiple shows including “How I Met Your Mother,” “Jimmy Kimmel” and “The Comedy Get Down.”
She does stand-up comedy, and her routines consist of personal subjects and experiences related to social commentary.
Springs opened for Martin Lawrence in 2015 and has toured with actor and comedian Katt Williams from 2014 through 2015. She is also a winner of the She-Devil Festival, a women in comedy event hosted in New York City, and the American Black Film Festival “Comedy Wings Competition” that is sponsored by HBO to find outstanding comedian talent.
Teaira Terry, comedy coordinator for SAC, said the reason for having this event is to promote Student Activities Council and to show that students can bring fun events to campus. She also said it will help promote Springs and help her become more well known.
“Students could gain something to do with their free time. They will be able to relax and listen to Daphnique tells some jokes and improv,” Terry said. “She may even need crowd participation. This is a show that will help students get out of their room and give them something to do.”
Joanna Shaver, coordinator of campus programming at Southeast, said the event will be about an hour long.
“Have an enjoyable time and come get away from school for a bit,” Shaver said.
“Students should attend this event because it's a way to release stress with a good laugh,” Terry said. “This could help end the week off right and also if someone just has a little extra free time on that day, they should stop by after grabbing some dinner.”
SAC will host two more free comedian events this semester. Brent Pella will be at Southeast on April 6 and late night breakfast will host two comedians on May 8.
