SEMO students and community members had the opportunity to participate in the first-ever 10-10-10 Triathlon on Feb. 21.

Each participant had to swim, bike, and run as far and fast as they could for ten minutes per event. After the ten minutes was up, a timekeeper would log the distance.

Following their completion of the three events, each member received a free t-shirt in honor of their support and participation in the triathlon.

Coordinator of the facilities and aquatics at the Rec Center and race director of the 10-10-10 Triathlon, Katelin Meadors, explained the benefits both mentally and physically participating could have.

“Physically helping them with all kinds of stuff, if they end up doing a lot of weight lifting stuff, they’re gonna end up working different parts of their body. The emotional part is the grid of that as well,” Meadors said.

Second-year graduate in higher education administration Nick Kalinin explains why the triathlon is so useful.

“I think triathlons are a cool way to test out your overall athleticism and not just focusing on running or biking,” Kalinin said.

Kalinin said this opportunity gives him a reason to challenge himself again after being in the military.

“When you’re in service you are always challenged not by choice, but just because that is the mission. Here as students, you get to create your own challenges so this definitely was an exciting ways to challenge myself,” Kalinin said.

Senior general studies major Andrew Parshall explains the workout that comes with the triathlon and what was his favorite event.

“I could just see a puddle of sweat on the ground where I was biking. And that made me proud at that moment,” Parshall said.

The next event hosted by the Rec Center is called Flicker Ball, with a combination of basketball and football combined. Tournament style, more information, and dates will be coming out soon.
