While most students were relaxing and taking some much needed rest from school over break, SEMO athletics were hard at work practicing and competing with other schools for OVC glory.

Here is everything that happened from SEMO athletics while on break.

Men’s Basketball:

The SEMO men’s basketball team currently sits at a 9-8 overall record, going 4-2 in Ohio Valley conference play, enough to keep them tied for second place.

The Redhawks also hold a massive home court advantage this season against competition, with seven of their nine wins coming at the Show Me Center.

This season many players are experiencing their first season with the program and already making an impact. One of these players on the offensive side of things is senior guard Teddy Washington Jr who transferred to SEMO from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Washington Jr. leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game, finishing 5 games as the team’s leading scorer. The Arkansas native also set a personal high for scoring at 28 points, hitting this mark in victories against Kansas City and conference rival Eastern Illinois University.

Despite the immediate impact from transfers, returning players have still been able to affect the team, such as junior point guard Rob Martin.

Martin is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.1 points-per-game, and leads the team in assists with 69 total on the season so far. Martin also set the season high for points scored in a single game for the team, with 29 points in a victory against Chattanooga.

Women’s Basketball:

The SEMO women’s basketball team currently holds an overall record of 4-11, going 2-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference, and currently sit at ninth in the conference.

This season marks head Coach Briley Palmer’s first year in charge of the Redhawks, coming to SEMO after coaching Mineral Area College for the last 4 years.

During that time, Palmer amassed a record of 77-40, including a season where the Lady Cardinals went 25-5 and finished second in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC).

Palmer leads a team of fresh faces to SEMO, as many of the team has transferred in from different schools, or are playing their first year of college basketball.

One of these fresh faces is freshman guard Zoe Best, who has had an immediate impact on the team.

Best leads the team in points scored, averaging 15 points-per-game, and has the most rebounds on the team, averaging 5.1 rebounds-per-game. Best also has finished as the team’s highest scorer on seven different occasions, and holds the team high with points scored in a game, with Indyia Bowen, as both hit the mark of 25 points in a game.

Best also has claimed two awards for OVC freshman of the week further adding to her impact this season.

The SEMO men and women’s basketball teams return to action this week on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Show me Center in Cape Girardeau with the women’s game starting first at 5:15.
